LHC orders heart medicines for Imran's detained sister

Weighs summoning officials over sisters' detention

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday directed jail authorities to provide heart medication to Dr Uzma Khanum, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, while reserving its decision on a request to summon the deputy commissioner, Lahore CCPO and other officials in person over the detention of Khan's sisters.

Justice Abher Gul Khan heard petitions challenging the detention of Noreen Niazi and Dr Uzma Khanum.

During the hearing, the petitioners' counsel sought the appearance of the relevant officials to explain the detention notifications and requested that the detainees be allowed access to essential medicines, clothes, spectacles, family members and lawyers.

The petitioners' counsel, Rana Mudassar Umar, told the court that the situation would become clear if the concerned officials appeared and explained the detention notifications.

He said the petitioners were not seeking any special facilities in jail but only basic necessities.

Dr Uzma Khanum's husband, Ahad Khan, appeared before the court and submitted that his wife suffered from a heart condition and needed three medicines daily. He requested that the medicines be delivered to her regularly in jail.

Rana Mudassar Umar also requested permission for Noreen Niazi to receive clothes, medicines and her spectacles, describing these as basic necessities and fundamental rights. He further sought permission for the detainees to meet their family members and lawyers in jail.

The counsel requested that the deputy commissioner, Lahore CCPO, SP and other relevant officials be summoned in person to explain the detentions.

After hearing the arguments, the court directed that Dr Uzma Khanum be provided with her medicines and reserved its decision on the request to summon the officials.
