‘Frasier’ star David Hyde Pierce reveals audience reaction to Niles and Daphne’s kiss
Frasier star David Hyde Pierce has recalled the enthusiastic audience reaction when his character, Niles Crane, finally kissed Jane Leeves’ Daphne Moon after years of romantic tension on the hit sitcom.
Pierce, 67, discussed the memorable moment during a recent interview with The Guardian, reflecting on how the show’s writers handled one of its most anticipated relationships. The series premiered on NBC in September 1993 and ran for 11 seasons.
Niles, the younger brother of psychiatrist Frasier Crane, developed feelings for Daphne, his father Martin’s live-in physiotherapist, early in the series. However, Daphne remained unaware of his affection for years, allowing their relationship to develop gradually across multiple seasons.
Recalling their first kiss in front of a live studio audience, Pierce said, “I remember very well — speaking of moments that stick with me — when we kissed in front of the live audience. They lost their minds.”
Leeves, 65, also reflected on the long-awaited romantic development, noting that seven seasons of suspense had left viewers eager to see the characters become a couple.
“Seven years is a long time and I think the audience was sort of begging to please bring this to a conclusion,” she told the publication.
Pierce agreed that prolonging the storyline indefinitely could have weakened its impact. He explained that the characters had spent years doubting whether they deserved each other, and eventually the story needed to move forward.
The actor also praised the creative team for knowing when to resolve the romance and how to conclude the sitcom. He said the creators ended the series while the cast and audience still wanted more, allowing them to shape a final season rather than waiting for the network to cancel the show.
The Niles and Daphne romance remains one of Frasier’s most memorable storylines, with their eventual relationship providing a major payoff for viewers who had followed the characters for years.
