Taylor Swift’s 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore' ranks last in 2026 Metacritic album ratings
The album received a Metacritic score of 39 out of 100, placing it last among 237 albums released in 2026

Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore has received a Metacritic score of 39 out of 100, placing it last among 237 albums released in 2026 that have received scores based on at least seven reviews, according to TV Fandom Lounge.
The four-track release has attracted criticism from several publications, with reviewers questioning its originality and creative direction.
The website also compared its reception with Katy Perry’s 143, which scored 35 on Metacritic in 2024.
The Telegraph’s reviewer, who described themselves as a Swiftie, offered a critical assessment of the release, writing, “I’m a Swiftie, and even I think these new songs are terrible. The Life of a Showgirl: Encore Edition is just as derivative and flat as the original album.”
The Guardian also questioned Swift’s recurring lyrical themes, suggesting that her songwriting increasingly relies on familiar references and self-reflection.
Meanwhile, The Independent criticised the track “Cleveland!”, describing its writing as “some of her worst writing”.
TV Fandom Lounge argues that Swift’s commercial success may have reduced the pressure to experiment creatively.
The publication also highlighted the multiple editions released for The Life of a Showgirl, estimating that collecting all 38 variants would cost $741.24.
Despite the critical response, the original album achieved a reported 4.002 million album-equivalent units in its first week, demonstrating Swift’s continued commercial reach.
The contrasting figures highlight the difference between critical reception and sales performance. While the Encore has attracted unfavourable reviews, its long-term commercial impact remains to be seen.
