Anne Hathaway praises Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ despite film’s disappointing box office debut
The Alejandro G. Iñárritu satire earned an $8m domestic opening and a C+ CinemaScore

Anne Hathaway has praised Tom Cruise’s latest film, Digger, calling the satirical comedy brilliant despite its disappointing box office debut.
The Verity star shared her reaction on Letterboxd, where she gave the film five stars in what was reported to be her first review on the platform. Hathaway praised the movie’s ambition, humour and unconventional approach, encouraging audiences to experience it before forming their own opinions.
“I loved this brilliant movie. It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious,” Hathaway wrote. “It’s worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it. For me? 10/10.”
Her enthusiastic response arrives as Digger faces questions about its commercial performance. The film opened in cinemas to an estimated $8m domestic debut and a $20m global start, while receiving a C+ CinemaScore.
According to Deadline, the production could lose around $150m, although the reported figure represents an estimate rather than a confirmed final financial result.
Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, an ageing oil magnate whose drilling activities trigger an ecological disaster. The film was written and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, known for films including Birdman and The Revenant.
Its ensemble cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde.
Despite the early financial concerns, Cruise has publicly expressed pride in the project. The actor, who also produced the film, thanked the cast and crew for their work and described the experience of making it as unforgettable.
Hathaway’s review adds a prominent celebrity endorsement to the conversation surrounding the release. Her response does not change the film’s box office figures, but it highlights the difference between commercial performance and individual reactions to a movie.
Rather than presenting her rating as a universal verdict, Hathaway encouraged viewers to see Digger and decide what they think for themselves. Her comments offer a positive counterpoint to the scrutiny surrounding the film’s opening results.
