The world of Crazy Rich Asians is returning to television, with Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh reprising their roles in a new HBO drama series based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels.

Wu, Golding and Chieng have joined the project as series regulars, while Yeoh will appear in a recurring role. The series will continue the story introduced in the 2018 film, bringing its original cast back together for a longer exploration of its characters and their relationships.

Adele Lim, who co wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. She described the production as a reunion for the creative team and said the eight episode format would allow the story to explore the characters and their world in greater depth.

Kevin Kwan, author of the novels, also welcomed the project, saying international fans had waited patiently for the next chapter. He expressed excitement about seeing his characters develop through a television adaptation.

The series is based on Kwan’s book trilogy, which began with Crazy Rich Asians in 2013, followed by China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017.

Jon M Chu, who directed the original film, is returning as an executive producer alongside Lim, Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. The project is co produced by HBO and Warner Bros Television.

Released in 2018, Crazy Rich Asians became a major box office success, earning more than $239m worldwide against a reported production budget of $30m. The romantic comedy also received strong critical reviews and helped bring a predominantly Asian cast to the centre of a major Hollywood studio production.

A feature film sequel had been in development for years but had not moved forward. The television adaptation now offers another route for continuing the story.

No premiere date has been announced in the supplied report. The returning cast and original creative team, however, mark a significant step towards revisiting the popular fictional world.
