PPP, PML-N break legislative logjam

.

ISLAMABAD:

Weeks of legislative friction between the PML-N-led government and the PPP finally gave way to an understanding on Thursday as the PPP agreed to back government legislation in the upcoming sessions of the National Assembly and Senate.

As part of the deal, the two sides have also agreed to constitute a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms. The PPP set to get its chairmanship.

The panel will bring all parliamentary parties to the table and representation in both houses would be determined according to their respective strength.

Sources said the understanding between the PPP and PML-N also covers the passage of around 30 bills, including legislation linked to conditions agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The PPP will extend its support to the government during the upcoming sessions of both houses for the approval of the agreed legislation, according to sources.

The PPP had repeatedly stalled or withheld support for federal government legislation in the National Assembly and Senate, demanding prior consultation, removal of unvetted clauses, and fulfillment of party conditions.
