'Crazy Rich Asians' is coming to HBO as a new eight-episode drama series
'Crazy Rich Asians' gets an HBO series order, with Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh returning to the cast

HBO has officially ordered a Crazy Rich Asians drama series, bringing back several stars and key creatives from the 2018 hit film.
Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians TV series, while Michelle Yeoh will return in a recurring role. The series is based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels and has been in development at HBO for about two years.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, is returning to adapt the story for television. Jon M. Chu, who directed Crazy Rich Asians, will also executive produce alongside Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
Unlike the original movie, which was released as a romantic comedy, the HBO adaptation will be a one-hour drama. The series will consist of eight episodes and is expected to explore the characters and world of Kwan’s books in greater depth.
The story follows Chinese-American Rachel Chu, played by Wu, and her fiancé Nick Young, played by Golding, as they travel to Singapore to meet his family. Rachel soon discovers that Nick comes from an extraordinarily wealthy family, setting off a series of complicated family and social conflicts.
The Crazy Rich Asians TV series was initially developed for HBO Max before moving to HBO. Warner Bros. Television and HBO are co-producing the project.
Lim said the series will serve as a continuation of the story, allowing the creative team to explore the characters across eight episodes. No premiere date has been announced yet.
