Joshua Jackson became emotional while remembering his late Dawson’s Creek costar James Van Der Beek at the Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala in Santa Monica, California.

Jackson, who played Pacey Witter on the popular teen drama, spoke on October 3 while presenting series creator Kevin Williamson with the Barbara Berlanti Hero Award. The honour recognised Williamson’s efforts to organise a Dawson’s Creek table read that supported Van Der Beek and his family following his cancer diagnosis.

During his speech, Jackson, 48, recalled how Van Der Beek’s health deteriorated shortly before the table read and praised Williamson for helping the cast come together to support their longtime friend.

Jackson said the event allowed Van Der Beek’s children to be surrounded by people celebrating their father and recognising the love and admiration he had earned throughout his career.

Williamson also became emotional while accepting the award. Reflecting on Van Der Beek’s role as Dawson Leery, he described the actor as “the soul of the show” and spoke about watching him grow from a young actor into a husband, father and friend.

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2024 and died in February 2026 at age 48. The actor had remained connected with his Dawson’s Creek costars during his illness.

Williamson recalled that Van Der Beek had hoped to attend the September 2025 table read but was unable to travel because of his health. He said Van Der Beek nevertheless remained present in spirit and praised his “unshakable courage.”

The Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala was established by Greg Berlanti in honour of his mother, who died of cancer. The event supports F Cancer’s work in cancer prevention, early detection and psychosocial initiatives.
