Harry Potter and Game of Thrones actor David Bradley has been named the new patron of Birmingham Hospice after visiting patients, families, staff and volunteers.
Bradley, who played Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch in the Harry Potter films, accepted the role following a visit to the hospice's Inpatient Unit and Living Well Centre in Selly Oak. The Living Well Centre supports people living with life-limiting illnesses.
During his visit, Bradley also met members of the Children's Healing and Therapeutic Support (CHATS) team, which provides support to younger family members when someone close to them dies.
Bradley said he was "very honoured" to become the hospice's patron after meeting the people involved in its work.
"I met some wonderful, dedicated people and it has been a salutary experience," he said.
"I've never had such a positive reaction to just being here. I've been all around the place and been shown round by a few of the patients as well as the wonderful staff. It's been a great day."
The actor said he was particularly impressed by the number of people supported by Birmingham Hospice, which provides care to 685 people each day either at the hospice or in their own homes.
"I think if people knew more about these places, how they are run and how dedicated staff are, people would become aware enough to realise we can all help," he added.
Birmingham Hospice chief executive Paul Bytheway said the charity was "incredibly proud" to welcome Bradley as its patron.
The hospice is only partially funded by the government and needs to raise £8m this year to continue operating, according to Bytheway. He said Bradley's support could help the organisation reach more people and raise "vital funds".
Bytheway also said Bradley's visit had been positively received by patients, families and staff. "Many of our patients are going through a very difficult time," he said. "It gave everyone a real lift."
