Sheryl Lee Ralph believes Abbott Elementary could continue for many more years, comparing the ABC sitcom’s potential longevity with the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Ralph, who plays kindergarten and music teacher Barbara Howard, discussed the future of Abbott Elementary ahead of its season 6 premiere on October 7. The Emmy-winning actress said she remains enthusiastic about playing Barbara and hopes to continue developing the character.

“I’m not going to tell you I’m tired of her because I’m not tired of her,” Ralph told PEOPLE. “I want to take this journey with her.”

The actress said she would be happy to remain on the series for another five seasons, which would bring Abbott Elementary to 11 seasons. She credited creator and star Quinta Brunson and the writers for determining how Barbara’s story will evolve.

Ralph also said she could see the sitcom continuing for decades, pointing to Grey’s Anatomy as an example.

“If Grey’s Anatomy could be on for 20 years, why can’t we?” she said.

Grey’s Anatomy, which premiered in 2005, is set to begin its 23rd season on October 15, shortly after Abbott Elementary returns for season 6.

Since its 2021 debut, Abbott Elementary has received widespread critical and commercial recognition, earning 37 Emmy nominations and four wins. Ralph won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022 for her role as Barbara Howard, while Brunson won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2023.

Ralph became the second Black woman to win the supporting actress Emmy in the category, following Jackée Harry’s 1987 win for 227. She has since received three additional nominations for her role on Abbott Elementary.
