Tom Cruise’s 'Jack Reacher' franchise ended after creator Lee Child exercised contract veto
Child said streaming offered the longer format he felt suited Reacher’s stories better

Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher movie franchise could have continued beyond two films, but author Lee Child has revealed that he personally used a contractual veto to prevent a third instalment.
Speaking exclusively to Collider ahead of the release of his new novel Chain Reaction, Child explained that his original film agreement, signed in 2005, gave him the right to decide whether the series would continue after two movies. He ultimately exercised that right.
"I had a clause in that movie contract that after two movies I had a veto whether we would do any more. I exercised that veto," Child said.
The first Jack Reacher film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Cruise in the title role, was released in 2012. It was followed by Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016, with the film franchise ending after the second instalment.
Child said the movies nevertheless had a significant impact on the popularity of his books. He recalled that eight older Reacher novels entered the top 10 paperback list shortly after the first film was released.
However, Child also acknowledged that readers had reservations about Cruise playing Reacher because the actor did not physically resemble the imposing character described in the novels. He said he initially viewed the books and films as separate versions, but later recognised that readers felt differently about the adaptation.
By 2017, Child believed television offered a better format for telling Reacher stories. The shift eventually led to Reacher, the Prime Video series starring Alan Ritchson, whose physical appearance more closely matches the character described in the books.
The series has since become an established franchise. Prime Video has renewed Reacher for a fifth season, while a sixth season was confirmed in September 2026.
Cruise’s two Jack Reacher films therefore remain the only theatrical adaptations featuring the actor, while Child’s character continues on television with Ritchson in the lead role.
