The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced a new theme for the 2027 Met Gala and its Costume Institute exhibition, after John Galliano withdrew from a planned retrospective.

Titled extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday, the exhibition will examine how designers reinterpret familiar clothing and ordinary materials. The show will feature pieces from its Costume Institute collection, alongside loans and new acquisitions, exploring how craftsmanship and experimentation can give everyday objects new meaning.

The exhibition will include jeans, T-shirts and puffer coats, as well as designs made from paper, plastic and metal. It is organised by Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator in charge, with Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben.

The announcement follows the cancellation of John Galliano: Horizons, which had been scheduled to open in May 2027. Galliano and the museum jointly announced on August 31 that the exhibition would not proceed after criticism of the decision to honour the designer, whose history includes antisemitic and racist remarks. Galliano said he remained accountable for the hurt caused, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities, and acknowledged that an exhibition was not a measure of meaningful atonement.

The Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 3, 2027, ahead of the exhibition’s public opening on May 9. The show will remain on view until January 9, 2028. Further details about the gala are expected later.

The new theme places everyday dress at the centre of the museum’s fashion event. Rather than focusing on one designer’s career, the exhibition will invite visitors to reconsider the creative possibilities of garments and materials.

The Met said the exhibition will also consider how wearing, styling and caring for clothes shape their significance over time. It is organised by the Costume Institute and supported by Instagram, with major funding from Moncler.
