Chris Hansen responds to 'Primetime' with the trailer for 'I’m Chris Hansen', a documentary years in the making now

Chris Hansen is pushing back against the A24 film Primetime with the trailer for his upcoming documentary I’m Chris Hansen, which explores the career of the former Dateline NBC journalist.

Hansen’s TruBlu streaming network released the trailer on Friday, September 25. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary has been in production for three years, meaning it was not created specifically in response to Primetime, which stars Robert Pattinson as Hansen.

The documentary arrives as Primetime opens in theatres. Hansen has been publicly critical of the film, calling it “a complete work of fiction attached to a real name” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Hansen said the film presents a darker and more dramatic version of the work associated with his To Catch a Predator investigations. He also argued that the movie could misrepresent efforts by people working to protect children from predators.

Hansen had not watched Primetime before the interview because he declined to sign a nondisclosure agreement connected to the project. However, he promoted TruBlu around the film’s theatrical release by purchasing advertisements that appeared ahead of screenings.

Despite his criticism of the movie, Hansen said he has no personal issue with Pattinson. He described the actor as talented and said Pattinson had been gracious when discussing him.

Hansen also questioned why the Primetime filmmakers did not contact him while developing a film in which Pattinson portrays him. He suggested the filmmakers had their own interpretation of the story, though that characterization reflects Hansen’s view.
