Antonio Banderas has joined Nicolas Cage in season five of HBO's crime anthology series True Detective, adding another major name to the upcoming instalment. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the new season set in Jamaica Bay, New York.

According to Deadline, Banderas will play Rai Garcia, while Cage will star as Henry Logan. Cage's involvement was confirmed at New York Comic-Con last week, following reports in 2025 that he was in talks to join the series.

Issa López, who created and led the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, is returning as writer, director and showrunner for season five. She will also executive produce alongside Banderas, Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Although plot details remain under wraps, López has hinted at connections between the upcoming season and the events of Night Country. She previously explained that the new instalment would feature a different story and new characters while retaining some important links to the Alaska-set season.

True Detective has explored different locations and casts throughout its run. The first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and was set in Louisiana. Season two moved to California, featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn, while the third season starred Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff in the Ozarks. The fourth season featured Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in Alaska.

HBO's head of drama series, Francesca Orsi, previously praised López's vision for the fifth season, describing its setting as different but equally powerful.

With Banderas and Cage leading the cast, True Detective season five is taking shape ahead of its planned 2027 production.
