Sombr challenges ‘nepo baby’ claims, explaining his parents’ work in HIV/AIDS prevention

Sombr has responded to being labelled a “nepo baby”, calling the suggestion that his family connections helped his music career “incredibly insane”.

The singer, whose real name is Shane Boose, said the label is often applied to artists shortly after they achieve success.

“Every time I see an artist blow up, I’m like, ‘Okay, this artist is great. I love them so much. They’re so talented.’ Three months later, somehow they’re a nepo baby,” he told ELLE.

Sombr explained that while his father was once a musician, he later became an events producer working with HIV/AIDS organisations. His mother is also involved in HIV/AIDS prevention.

“I will forever respect my dad and my mom. I’m so f---ing proud of them, because to devote your life to something like that is so incredible and important,” he said.

Addressing the idea that his parents’ work helped him secure a record deal, Sombr added, “To think that that could help me get signed or become a big artist because my dad devotes his life to fight AIDS is just incredibly insane.”

The "Homewrecker" singer also discussed his struggles at school, revealing that his focus on music affected his studies.

After his song “Caroline” gained traction online, several record labels approached him. Sombr ultimately signed with Warner Records, which he described as the “hungriest” label pursuing him, and left school to pursue music full-time.
