Taylor Swift 'Encore' fan theory gains attention amid ‘Patient Zero’ announcement

Taylor Swift has announced her new single ‘Patient Zero’ after an online countdown prompted fan theories about a possible new release.

Swift confirmed on Tuesday, that ‘Patient Zero’ will be released on Friday September 25.

The announcement followed a countdown on her online store, where visitors saw a red curtain and a clock set to end at 2pm Eastern Time.

Fans examined Swift’s recent online activity and her appearance in a 2026 Emmys parody sketch for potential clues.

Some linked the countdown to an ‘Encore’ theory, while others speculated that Swift could announce a re-recording of her self-titled debut album.

Swift wrote on social media: ‘I've been impatiently waiting to tell you’, confirming the single’s release date.

Her online store then changed from its sparkly orange design to dark grey and displayed three CD editions of ‘Patient Zero’. Each version features a different cover showing Swift in black, while acoustic and piano versions are also listed.

The announcement has also fuelled discussion about The Life of a Showgirl, with the store’s visual presentation appearing to connect the single with the album.

The ‘Encore’ theory also followed Swift’s Emmys appearance with Mariska Hargitay, during which she said, ‘Saccharide. Aries. From the Vineyard. North or South.’

Fans interpreted the words as a possible hidden reference to ‘Encore’, although Swift has not confirmed that interpretation.
