Melissa McCarthy reflects on Gilmore Girls calling its dialogue ‘really hard’ while recalling her first major TV role

Melissa McCarthy has reflected on her experience starring in Gilmore Girls, describing the series as “really hard” while recalling the demanding dialogue she had to perform.

McCarthy played Sookie St. James, Lorelai Gilmore’s best friend and a chef at the Independence Inn, in the series created by Amy Sherman-Palladino. Speaking to Variety on September 21, the actress discussed how the show became her first major television role.

McCarthy said Sherman-Palladino’s scripts were particularly challenging because of their lengthy, reference-filled dialogue. She recalled that the scripts could run to 93 pages and that actors were expected to follow the dialogue closely, even when they received lengthy scenes shortly before filming.

Despite the difficulty, McCarthy said the experience was valuable training. She also praised Sherman-Palladino for creating a distinctive world and maintaining her creative vision throughout the series.

Gilmore Girls premiered in 2000 and followed Lorelai and her daughter Rory, played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, as they lived in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. The series ran for seven seasons and 153 episodes.

McCarthy said she remains surprised that the show continues to attract younger viewers and that people still recognise her as Sookie despite her extensive career since the series ended.

The actress briefly returned as Sookie for the 2016 Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. She said she enjoyed reuniting with the cast and remains close to former co-stars Lauren Graham and Yanic Truesdale.

In August, HBO Max announced that a Gilmore Girls documentary was in development, featuring insights from Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino and Graham.
