Wyatt Russell joins Asa Butterfield in John Carroll Lynch’s chaotic comedy 'Happy'

Wyatt Russell has joined the cast of Happy, a new comedy directed by John Carroll Lynch. Russell will star alongside Asa Butterfield, Mark Strong, Kyra Sedgwick, Brittany O’Grady and Patti Harrison.

The film follows Myles, played by Butterfield, as he meets his girlfriend’s family for the first time. What begins as an uncomfortable introduction quickly turns into a chaotic experience involving a series of unexpected situations, excessive drinking and complicated family relationships.

According to the film’s synopsis, the family gathering includes a gun being fired at a birthday cake, a voyeuristic mother, a seductive sister and an unusually decent former boyfriend. The increasingly dysfunctional visit forces Myles to consider how far he is prepared to go for the woman he loves.

Russell is set to play Roger, with Lynch describing the actor as a strong fit for the role. The cast also includes Sedgwick, O’Grady and Harrison in undisclosed roles.

Happy was written by Ira Steven Behr, whose credits include the television series Outlander. The project marks Lynch’s second feature film as director following Lucky, which starred Harry Dean Stanton and David Lynch.

The comedy is produced by Claude Dal Farra and Brian Keady of BCDF Pictures, along with Richard Kahan and Behr. Embankment is handling global sales for the project.

Principal photography for Happy is scheduled to begin in March 2027 in the United States. Further details about the film’s release date and distribution have not yet been announced.

Russell most recently appeared in Marvel’s Thunderbolts, while Butterfield is known for Sex Education and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Strong has appeared in films including 1917, while Sedgwick is known for The Closer.
