Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew reveals Aslan’s first look, with Meryl Streep voicing the lion in Greta Gerwig’s movie

Greta Gerwig’s upcoming fantasy film Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has unveiled its first look at Aslan, with Meryl Streep confirmed as the voice of the iconic character.

The images were revealed as part of Empire’s world-exclusive coverage of the Netflix adaptation, which is based on C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series. The film is set to explore the origins of the fantasy world and marks the first cinematic adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew.

The first-look cover features Aslan, the mythical lion who plays a central role in the Narnia story. Gerwig’s interpretation gives the character heterochromic eyes and a distinctive red-striped appearance, with the design drawing inspiration from musician David Bowie.

Streep reunites with Gerwig after starring in the director’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women. Gerwig explained that she wanted an actor who could bring wisdom and emotional depth to Aslan while also conveying a sense of wonder and joy.

The film stars Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell alongside Streep. Gerwig has also discussed the film’s approach to Lewis’ fantasy world, including its exploration of the Narnia stories in a 1950s setting.

Empire’s subscriber edition includes artwork by concept artist Jaime Jones depicting Aslan creating Narnia itself. The covers accompany the publication’s behind-the-scenes coverage of Gerwig’s production and its expansive fantasy world.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on February 12, 2027, before its Netflix release on April 2, 2027. The film represents Gerwig’s first major feature project following Barbie, which earned more than $1.4 billion worldwide.
