Seth Rogen says Babies draws heavily from his and Lauren Miller Rogen's experiences as they explored the decision to remain child-free.

Seth Rogen has discussed the personal inspiration behind Babies, the upcoming comedy-drama written and directed by his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen.

The film stars Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick as married couple Aaron and Annie, who begin questioning whether parenthood is the right choice for them. Speaking during the Toronto International Film Festival, Rogen said the movie reflects his own experiences and the conversations he and Lauren have had about having children.

Rogen described Babies as more personal than his previous projects, praising Lauren for exploring private aspects of their lives through the story. The film follows Aaron and Annie after their friend and her young daughter move into their home, giving the couple an opportunity to experience the realities of parenthood firsthand.

Lauren Miller Rogen was inspired to develop the story after a divorced friend and her child lived with her and Seth for a year about a decade ago. The idea eventually became a feature film after Lauren had worked through her own thoughts about parenthood. She wrote the screenplay in January 2025, with production beginning later that year.

The movie also explores Annie's mother's battle with Alzheimer's disease, a storyline influenced by Lauren's personal experience. Her mother died from complications related to early-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2020.

Anna Kendrick, who plays Annie, said the film's closeness to Lauren's real experiences made the material particularly intense.

While Babies examines the choice to remain child-free, Lauren said the film also aims to honour people who choose to become parents and the relationships they build with their children.

Babies premiered at TIFF on Saturday and is scheduled to be released in theatres in 2027.
