Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday is already generating extraordinary box office demand, with Disney revealing that the upcoming superhero blockbuster has passed $50m in domestic pre sales more than three months before its theatrical release. The figure was announced by Disney chief financial officer Hugh Johnston during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, giving an early indication of the scale of anticipation surrounding the next Avengers film.
The $50m milestone puts Avengers: Doomsday within striking distance of several major pre sale benchmarks. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey reached approximately $40m in pre sales, while Avengers: Endgame recorded $60m in its comparable advance sales. The current benchmark belongs to Spider Man: Brand New Day, which reached $72m in previews and advance ticket activity, meaning Doomsday would need another $22m to match that figure.
The timing makes the number particularly notable. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in cinemas on December 18, 2026, meaning Disney is already seeing substantial consumer spending well ahead of the film’s arrival. Marvel Studios released tickets for the movie in July, with the initial sales push placing significant attention on Infinity Vision certified screens. Disney has described Infinity Vision as a new certification for premium large format cinemas designed to identify auditoriums meeting specific standards for screen size, image brightness and sound.
According to Johnston, roughly 70% of the $50m in domestic pre sales has come from Infinity Vision tickets. That represents approximately $35m, making the premium screening initiative a major contributor to the early total.
Infinity Vision was introduced as Disney’s answer to a significant scheduling problem surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. Christopher Nolan’s Dune: Part Three is also scheduled for December 18 and has secured IMAX screens during the release period. Rather than relying on IMAX for its premium presentation, Disney has pushed Infinity Vision as a certification covering qualifying premium auditoriums across different cinema chains.
The certification is not a new projection technology comparable to IMAX. Instead, it identifies cinemas that satisfy Disney’s technical requirements. Certified auditoriums must have screens at least 45 feet wide, immersive sound such as Dolby Atmos or 7.1 and specified brightness levels. Disney has said the programme is intended to help audiences identify screens capable of presenting its films at a high technical standard.
The scale of exhibitor interest has also been significant. Disney said it received more than 7,500 applications from exhibitor screens around the world seeking Infinity Vision certification, with the company reviewing those locations for eligibility.
Avengers: Doomsday will eventually become the fifth main Avengers film and is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. Robert Downey Jr returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a new role as Victor von Doom, while the cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby among a large ensemble of returning Marvel stars and characters.
The build up will also include Avengers: Endgame Encore, which returns to cinemas on September 25. The re release features new material connected to Doomsday, with additional content planned for selected IMAX and Infinity Vision screenings. Joe Russo has described the re release as an important bridge between Endgame and the upcoming film.
