Sandra Bullock shares her parenting advice as she opens up about her 'unique' teenagers

Sandra Bullock has opened up about raising her two teenagers, Louis and Laila, joking that there is no universal advice for parenting teens because every child is “unique”.

The Oscar-winning actress, 62, discussed motherhood during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, September 8, where host Jimmy Fallon asked her for advice on raising teenagers.

Bullock, who has a 16-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter, responded with a humorous “I’m sorry”, prompting laughter from the studio audience. She went on to explain that parenting advice is difficult to give because every teenager is different.

“I’m sorry,” Bullock joked when Fallon asked for her advice. She added that “everyone’s got unique kids”, highlighting how different her own children are.

Bullock described her son Louis as being interested in basketball and fashion, while she jokingly referred to Laila as a “government hacker”. Her comments offered a rare glimpse into the personalities of her children, whom she adopted in her late forties.

The actress also revealed that both of her children have made voice cameos in her upcoming film Practical Magic 2, in which she returns as Sally Owens alongside Nicole Kidman.

Bullock explained that her children’s voices can be heard during a scene in which Sally reconnects with her magic after previously cutting herself off from it because she believed it had brought too much tragedy into her life.

When Sally’s magic is restored, the first thing she hears is the voices of her children. Bullock said the inclusion was inspired by her own experience as a mother, explaining that “you always hear your babies”.

The actress has spoken extensively about motherhood while promoting Practical Magic 2. In a recent conversation with her longtime friend Jennifer Aniston for Interview Magazine, Bullock explained that her children now play a major role in determining which acting projects she accepts.

“If the kids can’t be with me, I’m not going,” she said of choosing movie roles. She added that as her children get older, their schedules have become more important than her career.

Bullock acknowledged that the arrangement will become more difficult as Louis approaches adulthood and prepares to eventually leave home. She said she is also having to work out how to navigate a future in which her children will no longer need her in the same way.

The actress has also previously shared humorous stories about Laila’s outspoken personality. Earlier this month, Bullock revealed that her daughter believes she should start dating again, although Laila has some specific requirements for her mother's potential partner.

According to Bullock, Laila suggested that she date someone such as a rapper or basketball player who can “get stuff”. Bullock also described her daughter as brutally honest, recalling that Laila once told her to put a filter on her camera during a Zoom call.

Bullock was previously in a long-term relationship with photographer Bryan Randall, who died in August 2023 at the age of 57 following a private battle with ALS. Randall and Bullock co-parented Louis and Laila, as well as Randall’s daughter from a previous relationship.

While Bullock continues to balance her return to Hollywood with raising her children, her latest comments show that motherhood remains central to the decisions she makes both personally and professionally.

Practical Magic 2, starring Bullock and Kidman, is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on September 10, 2026.
