Hideo Kojima says he is 'envious' of 21-year-old 'Backrooms' director Kane Parsons and his early film career

Hideo Kojima has praised Backrooms director Kane Parsons, saying he is “envious” of the 21-year-old filmmaker’s rapid rise following the Japanese premiere of the film.

Parsons was 20 when Backrooms debuted at No. 1 at the box office, making him the youngest director to have a film debut at the top of the box office.

He originally gained attention online through his Backrooms short films on YouTube, with his work eventually leading to the feature adaptation.

Speaking at the Japanese premiere of Backrooms, Kojima discussed the differences between his own early career and Parsons’ path into filmmaking.

“He’s 21, and I’m 63. But when people who grew up digital take that digital sensibility and burn it onto analogue film — I think what you’ll see is just how remarkable a result that can be.”

Kojima was also asked about the differences between his career and Parsons’ rise. “I made Metal Gear at 23 – but A24 didn’t get in touch with me until I was about 59. So it’s completely different, isn’t it?”

Kojima added that the opportunities available to young creators have changed since he began his career.

“I’m envious, honestly. There was no A24 when I was about 25. I wish they’d called.”

Kojima is currently working with A24 on a film adaptation of the Death Stranding universe.
