Chris Rock opens up about Misty Green and his possible return to the Oscars

Chris Rock is entering a new phase of his career with Misty Green, his first feature film as a director in 12 years. The comedy-drama is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before its theatrical release through A24 in October.

The film stars Rosalind Eleazar as Misty Green, a once-successful actress struggling financially after the death of her wealthy partner. Anna Kendrick, Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya and Topher Grace also appear in the film, with Rock taking on an acting role alongside his directing duties.

Rock, 61, described himself as a “director guy” and said he has become increasingly interested in writing and directing as he gets older. He said the creative process appeals to him because it allows him to focus on making a project rather than constantly seeking acting work.

Misty Green follows Rock’s earlier directorial projects Head of State, I Think I Love My Wife and Top Five. He said the new film had a budget of about $5 million, making it his smallest movie to date but one of the most important projects of his career.

Rock also discussed whether he would return to the Oscars after hosting the ceremony in the past. He said he is not ruling out another appearance but indicated that he would only attend as a nominee. “The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated,” he said.

The comedian also reflected on the 2022 Oscars incident involving Will Smith, saying he wished nothing had happened but did not want the controversy to overshadow Eleazar’s performance in Misty Green.
