Ryan Reynolds says his 50th birthday will be anything but a huge Hollywood bash as he gets enough attention already

Ryan Reynolds is approaching his 50th birthday with a surprisingly low key attitude, revealing that he has no desire to throw himself a huge celebration when the milestone arrives on October 23.

The actor opened up about his birthday plans while promoting his new action comedy Mayday, telling PEOPLE that elaborate birthday parties are not something he particularly enjoys. Reynolds, who is currently 49, made it clear that reaching 50 is not making him eager to become the centre of an even bigger spectacle.

“I don’t like birthdays. I mean, I’m fine with it,” Reynolds told PEOPLE. “I don’t bemoan a birthday, but I’m not like, ‘Hey, let’s have a huge party for me.’”

The Deadpool star then offered an explanation that fits his famously self aware sense of humour.

“I’m good. I get enough attention. I was just on a red carpet. This is plenty,” he said.

Reynolds has already been spending plenty of time in the public eye while promoting Mayday, his latest film with Kenneth Branagh. The Apple Original Film, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, stars Reynolds as US Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy Kelly, who becomes stranded behind enemy lines during a Cold War mission. Branagh plays former KGB agent Nikolai Ustinov, who becomes an unlikely ally as Reynolds’ character attempts to survive.

Mayday premiered globally on Apple TV on September 4, following its New York world premiere on September 1. The film marks another major project for Reynolds as he heads towards his milestone birthday.

His birthday comments also come during an unusually crowded period for the Reynolds and Blake Lively household. Lively turned 39 on August 25, with Reynolds marking the occasion on Instagram with a loving tribute and previously describing her birthday as the family’s “Super Bowl”.

The couple’s calendar becomes particularly hectic between August and December. Reynolds has described the period as “Birthday Alley” because it includes his own birthday, Lively’s birthday, the birthdays of three of their four children and the couple’s wedding anniversary on September 9. The entire stretch covers 113 days.

Their children also contribute to the packed schedule. James celebrates a birthday in December, Inez has a September birthday and Betty’s falls in October. Their youngest child, Olin, has a February birthday, meaning his celebration falls outside the main run of family festivities.

Reynolds has joked about the relentless sequence of celebrations, describing himself as being surrounded by balloons and festivities as the family moves from one occasion to another and eventually reaches Christmas. That makes his reluctance to organise an enormous personal birthday party particularly understandable.

Instead of planning an extravagant Hollywood event, Reynolds appears perfectly comfortable letting the milestone arrive amid the family celebrations already filling his calendar. His comments also underline how different a celebrity birthday can look behind the scenes, with the actor seemingly more interested in keeping the occasion manageable than turning 50 into another major public event.
