Marvel Comics replaced Moon Knight after Marc Spector's death, but return could have clues about eventual MCU comeback

Marvel Comics replaced Moon Knight after Marc Spector died in 2023, introducing an imposter who claimed the mantle before Spector returned from the dead.

The storyline could offer clues about how Marvel Studios might handle Moon Knight's eventual MCU return.

Marc Spector was killed in Moon Knight No. 30 while sacrificing himself to prevent a major explosion caused by the Black Spectre.

Following his death, the Midnight Mission continued his work protecting vulnerable people from supernatural threats.

The mantle was later taken by Maximillian Coleridge, a former West Coast Avenger who used Darkforce abilities.

He adopted an inverted, dark version of Moon Knight's costume and began targeting the Midnight Mission, using methods that contrasted with Spector's approach.

Spector eventually returned during Blood Hunt after Khonshu resurrected his former champions.

His return led to a confrontation with Coleridge in Vengeance of the Moon Knight No. 8, where Spector defeated the imposter and reclaimed the Moon Knight mantle.

The comic storyline comes as Marvel Studios continues to delay Moon Knight's return following Oscar Isaac's debut as the character in the 2022 Disney+ series.

The show introduced Marc Spector alongside his alternate personalities Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, as well as the Egyptian god Khonshu.

A second season does not currently appear to be planned. Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum said in 2025 that the studio's movie division had plans for the character.
