David Byrne reflects on ‘Talking Heads’ enduring appeal as the band’s four members reunite for a SiriusXM event

David Byrne has reflected on the enduring legacy of Talking Heads, admitting that he finds it “surprising” that the band’s music has continued to connect with new generations.
Byrne reunited with Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison for a rare conversation hosted by Este Haim at SiriusXM’s New York studios on September 28. The event was held to launch Talking Heads Radio, a temporary SiriusXM channel celebrating more than 50 years of the band’s music. The full conversation airs on October 1 at 12pm ET.
During the discussion, the band members looked back at their creative process and the way their approach evolved across their early records. Harrison explained that each album brought a different process, with the group deliberately seeking new challenges rather than repeating what they had done before.
Byrne, meanwhile, said he generally tries not to look back too much, although he remains proud of what Talking Heads accomplished.
“I’m very proud of everything we did,” he said, before acknowledging the continued relevance of their music. “It’s kind of surprising how this stuff has kind of stood the test of time, that it keeps finding a new audience.”
Frantz also reflected on what he believed made Talking Heads distinctive, pointing to the chemistry between the four members and their collaborative approach to songwriting and performance.
The reunion comes after the group appeared together publicly in 2023 for a Q&A at the Toronto International Film Festival celebrating the 40th anniversary of Stop Making Sense. The band has not announced a live reunion performance.
Talking Heads Radio will feature the band’s songs, deep cuts, stories and guest DJ sets, and will be available on SiriusXM’s car service through October 22 and the SiriusXM app through October 31.
