Dolly Parton honoured with a New York day on September 25 as fans prepare a very Dolly celebration

Dolly Parton is set to receive a major New York tribute this month, with Manhattan officially declaring September 25, 2026 as Dolly Parton Appreciation Day.

The proclamation was announced by Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman Sigal on September 2, recognising Parton’s enormous impact on music, entertainment, culture and philanthropy. The date was chosen with a playful connection to one of Parton’s best known songs, "9 to 5", with September 25 written as 9/25. The tribute comes shortly after the country music legend died at 80 on August 25 following a brief battle with cancer.

In the official proclamation, Hoylman Sigal described Parton as one of the defining American icons of her generation and praised the lasting influence of her music, performances and humanitarian work. He also noted her connection with literacy, education, children and communities through projects including the Imagination Library.

Parton’s death prompted an immediate wave of tributes across New York. The Empire State Building and other landmarks were illuminated in pink in her memory, while the IFC Center displayed a tribute on its marquee. The response reflected the unusual reach of a performer whose career extended across country music, Hollywood, television and philanthropy.
