Prime Video cancels 'Spider-Noir' after just one season

Prime Video has cancelled Spider-Noir after one season, ending the Marvel series starring Nicolas Cage as the Spider-Man Noir character Ben Reilly.

The series will not return for a second season after its eight-episode run.

The cancellation comes as Spider-Noir heads into the first weekend of the Emmy Awards with 11 nominations, making it Prime Video’s most-nominated programme this year. The series also earned strong reviews, with a 92% critics’ score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Spider-Noir was the first Marvel-related series released under Amazon’s partnership with Sony Pictures Television to develop live-action shows based on characters from the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters.

The series is set during the Great Depression and follows Ben Reilly, a struggling private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to confront his past after a personal tragedy. Cage leads the cast alongside Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.

Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as showrunners and executive producers, while Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also executive produced the series. Harry Bradbeer directed the first two episodes.

Spider-Noir premiered on MGM+ on May 25 before arriving on Prime Video the following day. Viewers could watch the series in either colour or black and white. According to Nielsen, the show recorded 2.6 billion viewing minutes during its first six weeks of streaming.

The cancellation follows the earlier scrapping of Silk: Spider Society, which was originally planned as the first series under Amazon and Sony’s Marvel deal.
