Harry Potter season 2 casts new stars as Ginny Weasley, Tom Riddle and Dobby

HBO has announced three major casting additions for season 2 of its upcoming Harry Potter series, with Bonnie Hill, Billy Barratt and Lenny Rush joining the cast.

Hill will play Ginny Weasley, taking over the role from Gracie Cochrane, who portrayed Ron Weasley’s younger sister in season 1. Ginny becomes more prominent in the second story, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as she begins communicating with Tom Riddle through his mysterious diary.

Barratt has been cast as young Tom Riddle, the teenage version of Lord Voldemort. The actor, known for Invasion, is in his late teens, making him closer in age to the 16-year-old Riddle described in the book. Christian Coulson, who played the character in the 2002 film adaptation, was 23 when he was cast.

Rush, meanwhile, will portray the beloved house-elf Dobby. The 17-year-old actor has appeared in Am I Being Unreasonable? and will also feature in the upcoming sixth season of Slow Horses. HBO has not confirmed whether Dobby will be created through CGI, motion capture or prosthetics.

The three actors join Game of Thrones star Kit Harington, who has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart for season 2.

Season 2 of the Harry Potter HBO series is expected to begin filming this autumn. The first season will premiere around Christmas 2026 on HBO and stream exclusively on HBO Max.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost also star.
