'Game of Thrones: The Mad King' to bring Westeros to London in 2027

George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King stage adaptation is set to transfer to London in 2027 following its successful run at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Royal Shakespeare Company and Martin announced the London transfer on September 4. The production will move to an as-yet-unconfirmed London venue, with performance dates to be announced at a later time.

The play will conclude its Stratford-upon-Avon run at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on September 5. It had its world premiere at the venue on August 8 and has attracted strong audience interest during its run.

Martin, who created the Game of Thrones franchise and serves as an executive producer on The Mad King, said he was pleased with the production’s reception in Stratford and looked forward to bringing it to a wider audience in London.

Directed by Dominic Cooke and adapted by Duncan Macmillan from Martin’s novels, Game of Thrones: The Mad King explores events in Westeros before the story of the original book series. The production focuses on the final years of King Aerys II Targaryen, also known as the Mad King.

The story is inspired by the history surrounding Robert’s Rebellion and features Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark and Robert Baratheon. The conflict ultimately leads to the fall of House Targaryen and the events that shape the world of Game of Thrones.

Set in Harrenhal as winter begins to thaw, the stage adaptation follows political tensions, family conflicts and a growing conspiracy against the Mad King.

The production is presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company with Access Entertainment and Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures on behalf of HBO.
