Jennifer Lawrence has offered an unusually candid look at her approach to beauty, ageing and cosmetic treatments, revealing that there is one procedure she would love to try but believes would be impossible to keep under the radar.
Speaking to Vogue during a visit to the newly opened Dior Spa Cipriani at Hotel Cipriani in Venice, the Oscar winning actress discussed everything from facials and Botox to skincare, exercise and the pressures that come with being photographed constantly. Her comments about cosmetic procedures quickly stood out because Lawrence was unusually open about the choices she has considered for her face.
Lawrence, who is 36, said she gets what is commonly described as baby Botox, referring to smaller amounts of Botox intended to soften lines while retaining facial movement. She explained that maintaining movement in her face is particularly important because of her work as an actress.
"I need to have movement in my face. I get baby Botox, but I can't do a lot," Lawrence. She added that she is comfortable with her skin looking slightly less firm if that allows her face to retain a natural appearance.
"If my skin is going to be a little saggier than I would like, at least it looks dewy and pretty," she said.
The actress was also frank about procedures she has considered but has decided against for now. Among them is buccal fat removal, a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from the cheeks to create a more sculpted facial appearance. Lawrence admitted that she would like to have it done, but believes the resulting change would be immediately obvious to the public.
"I mean, I would love to have a buccal fat removal. I can't because everybody would know, but just know that I want that," she said.
Lawrence also revealed that fat transfers make her nervous. Rather than dismissing the procedure altogether, she said she prefers to observe how cosmetic trends develop before deciding whether she wants to participate.
"I'm really nervous about these fat transfers," she said, adding that she supports other people choosing them because she wants to see how the results develop.
Her comments came during a relaxed conversation about a lengthy spa visit in Venice. Lawrence said she had spent around five and a half hours undergoing treatments, including a facial and massage. She particularly likes lymphatic drainage after travelling because she finds it useful for reducing puffiness.
She also praised Dior's Mascarade facial, which combines facial massage with treatments including radiofrequency, microcurrent, ultrasound, cooling masks, cream masks and LED treatments. Lawrence said she likes radiofrequency because she feels she has large cheeks and enjoys working on the appearance of her face.
Her skincare routine has also entered a new phase. Lawrence said she has started using Tretinoin, commonly referred to as Tret, as part of what she called her retinol journey. Because retinoids can cause irritation, she has been focusing heavily on hydration and shared a skincare method involving moisturiser, Tret and oil.
She also described using Desitin, a nappy cream, when her skin becomes red while adjusting to retinoids. Lawrence said she noticed that it helped calm the redness and made her pores appear smaller.
Sun protection has become another priority. Lawrence said she wears sunscreen on her hands and has been covering areas affected by melasma with a scarf since starting Tret. She joked that photographs sometimes make people assume the scarf is a fashion choice when she is actually trying to protect irritated skin from the sun.
Away from cosmetic procedures, Lawrence admitted that she has little patience for traditional salon maintenance. She said she hates having her hair coloured and dislikes going to nail salons because she finds the appointments lengthy and boring.
The actress has also been adjusting her fitness routine after completing work on Martin Scorsese's upcoming thriller What Happens at Night, in which she stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. After finishing filming in Brooklyn, Lawrence said she planned to focus on strength training and yoga.
