Inde Navarrette to star in Apple’s bizarre sci-fi thriller 'The Waffle House Index'

Inde Navarrette is set to star in The Waffle House Index, a sci-fi thriller acquired by Apple Original Films, with Plan B Entertainment producing the project.

The film will mark another major step in Navarrette’s growing career following her casting as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie. She will also serve as an executive producer on The Waffle House Index, marking her first producing credit.

The project is based on a screenplay by Andrew Nunnelly, which appeared on the 2025 Black List. Louis Paxton, whose film The Incomer won the NEXT Innovator Award at the Sundance Film Festival, is attached to direct. Sources cited in the report said the deal for the screenplay was worth seven figures.

The Waffle House Index takes its title from an informal measure used to assess the severity of hurricanes based on the level of service available at Waffle House restaurants. The index ranges from green for full service to yellow for limited service and red when a location is closed because of unsafe conditions.

Nunnelly’s screenplay follows a Waffle House waitress whose difficult night shift takes an unexpected turn when an armed stranger enters the restaurant. The story reportedly expands into a sci-fi adventure involving a major flood, killer crocodiles, a nuclear explosion, a hidden magical bunker and aliens.

Plan B Entertainment, led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, is producing the film. The project marks another collaboration between Plan B and Apple Original Films.

Navarrette previously appeared in 13 Reasons Why and Superman & Lois. She gained wider attention following her role in the horror film Obsession and is now attached to several high-profile projects.
