Andrew Garfield has a surprising reason for not messaging Tom Holland about ‘Spider Man: Brand New Day’

Andrew Garfield has once again addressed speculation surrounding his possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, insisting that he is not appearing in Avengers: Doomsday while admitting that he has yet to watch Tom Holland’s latest Spider Man film.

Speaking to Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of his upcoming historical drama The Uprising, Garfield revealed that he has not yet seen Spider Man: Brand New Day. He also said he has not watched Holland’s Christopher Nolan film The Odyssey, despite both projects becoming major talking points among audiences.

Garfield explained that he wants to see Holland’s work before reaching out to his former co star. He said he did not want to send a message simply because the films had become major commercial successes, adding that he would contact Holland after watching the performances.

The comments come as Spider Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the box office. The film stars Holland as Peter Parker and marks his fourth solo Spider Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures lists Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo in the cast. The film was released in cinemas on July 31, 2026.

Garfield has a particularly strong connection to the character. He first played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider Man in 2012 before returning for The Amazing Spider Man 2 in 2014. He later reprised the role in Spider Man: No Way Home, sharing the screen with Holland and Tobey Maguire as the Marvel multiverse brought together three live action versions of the superhero.

His latest comments have renewed attention around another major Marvel project, Avengers: Doomsday. Garfield was asked directly about his involvement in the film and responded, "I’m not." The actor was then reminded that he had previously denied appearing in Spider Man: No Way Home before his surprise return was revealed.

Garfield responded with a smile, acknowledging his complicated history with Marvel spoilers and saying audiences would eventually find out the truth. That history has naturally left fans cautious whenever he discusses potential Spider Man appearances.

Marvel has officially announced Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, 2026. The film is directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo and features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Marvel’s official movie page currently does not list Garfield among its announced cast.

Meanwhile, Garfield is preparing for the release of The Uprising, directed by Paul Greengrass. The film casts him as the leader of a rebellion against King Richard II and draws from the historical events associated with the uprising that helped inspire the Robin Hood legend. Focus Features has set the film for release in September 2026.

Garfield also spoke about the physical demands of making the film, revealing that he performed many of his own stunts during its extensive fight sequences. His comments about needing ice packs after the demanding work offered a lighter moment during an otherwise serious discussion about his latest role.
