Kit Harington casts doubt on Black Knight return as Marvel future remains unclear

Kit Harington has offered a blunt update on the future of Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealing that he is unaware of any current plans for his character to return as the Black Knight.

Harington made his MCU debut as Dane Whitman in Chloé Zhao’s Eternals, released in 2021. The film introduced him as a museum curator and the romantic partner of Gemma Chan’s Sersi, while keeping his connection to the Black Knight mythology largely in reserve.

That changed during the post credits scene. Dane was shown preparing to handle the Ebony Blade, the powerful and cursed weapon associated with the Black Knight in Marvel Comics. Just as he was about to take the sword, an off screen voice asked whether he was ready. The voice belonged to Mahershala Ali, who was identified as Blade.

The sequence appeared to establish a possible connection between Harington’s character and Marvel’s supernatural corner, but Dane has not appeared in another MCU film or series since Eternals.

Now Harington has acknowledged that he does not know whether Marvel intends to continue the story. Speaking to MovieWeb while promoting his upcoming MGM+ limited series A Tale of Two Cities, the actor said he would be interested in returning but was uncertain about the studio’s plans.

"I mean I’d love to. I don’t think there’s any plan to. I hate to break it to you," Harington said.

Despite that uncertainty, the actor remains enthusiastic about the character and particularly likes the darker storyline connected to the Ebony Blade. He explained that the weapon’s influence could allow the character to explore addiction and moral deterioration.

"I think he’s a wicked character," Harington said. "There’s a part of him, that whole Ebony Blade stuff, where the more he kills, the worse he gets, the more addicted."

Harington also described Dane as someone who starts out good before becoming increasingly corrupted, saying that this gives the character strong dramatic potential. He concluded his comments by reiterating that he simply does not know whether Marvel currently has plans for the character.

The uncertainty surrounding Black Knight comes after several years of changes to Marvel’s plans for its supernatural characters. Ali was originally attached to star in Blade, but Marvel’s long developing project has undergone substantial changes and Ali is no longer attached to the film. That development further complicated the post credits tease connecting Dane Whitman to Blade.

There has also been no announced Eternals sequel. The 2021 film introduced a large ensemble that included Sersi, Ikaris, Kingo, Phastos, Thena, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh and Sprite, alongside Dane and Harry Styles’ Eros. Several of those characters have yet to return in the MCU.

For Harington, the absence of a Marvel commitment has not left him short of work. He is preparing to appear as Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities, a four part adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel. The series stars Harington alongside François Civil and Mirren Mack and is scheduled to premiere on MGM+ on September 6, 2026.

The actor is also set to join the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter television series as Gilderoy Lockhart, giving him another major franchise role while his Marvel future remains unresolved.

For now, Harington’s comments make one thing clear: he has not closed the door on Black Knight. He remains interested in exploring Dane Whitman and the Ebony Blade, but there is currently no confirmed Marvel project announced for his return. Until Marvel Studios provides an official update, the character’s next appearance remains uncertain.
