Met Gala 2027 drops John Galliano exhibit amid growing backlash

John Galliano has withdrawn his planned exhibition at the Met Gala 2027 following criticism over his past antisemitic remarks.

The controversial fashion designer announced the decision on social media on Monday, saying he had decided that the exhibition should not go ahead “at this time” after discussions with those involved in the project.

“After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,” Galliano said.

The planned exhibition was set to be connected to the 2027 Met Gala, which is organised by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The decision to honour Galliano had faced criticism because of antisemitic comments he made at a Paris café in 2011.

At the time, Galliano was the creative director of Dior. He was subsequently dismissed by the fashion house following the controversy.

Galliano later apologised for his behaviour and spoke publicly about his struggles with addiction and his efforts to rebuild his career in fashion.

Anna Wintour has been a longtime supporter of Galliano and has maintained a professional relationship with the designer over the years. Her involvement with the planned exhibition had also drawn attention to the decision to feature his work.

With Galliano withdrawing from the project, the planned exhibition will no longer take place as originally intended as part of the 2027 Met Gala.
