IG orders crackdown on vehicle theft trade

The Sindh police chief has directed his force to intensify action against organised gangs involved in vehicle theft and those engaged in the buying and selling of stolen vehicles and their parts.

IG Sindh Police Javed Alam Odho issued the directives during a review meeting on the performance of the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) held at the Central Police Office on Friday.

He directed AIG Karachi Azad Khan to take indiscriminate action against vehicle theft gangs, their facilitators and people involved in the trade of stolen vehicles and parts. He also called for stronger coordination among the Highway Patrol Unit, Safe City project and AVLC to improve the recovery of stolen and snatched vehicles. IG Odho said the modern surveillance system of Safe City should be integrated with the operational capabilities of AVLC to make vehicle recovery efforts more effective.

He directed AVLC officials to ensure quality, speed and transparency in the investigation of vehicle theft cases and called for an effective information-sharing mechanism among different police units to facilitate the timely recovery of stolen vehicles.

The IG further ordered the establishment of an effective monitoring and follow-up system extending from the district level to the central command to improve AVLC's performance.
