Ellen Pompeo is returning to a medical setting, but her next character will be very different from Meredith Grey. The Grey's Anatomy star has been cast as the lead in Not A Sound, a new drama in development at Hulu from David E Kelley Productions.

Pompeo will play Amelia Winn, a disgraced former ER nurse whose life changes after she loses her hearing in a devastating hit and run accident. The character is based on the protagonist of Heather Gudenkauf's 2017 thriller novel Not a Sound. In the television adaptation, Amelia's medical career has already been disrupted by the accident when an unexpected discovery pulls her towards a dangerous mystery.

According to the project's official synopsis, Amelia and her service dog discover the murdered body of a former colleague. The discovery draws her into an investigation that could eventually expose the truth behind the accident that caused her hearing loss and changed the direction of her life.

The role gives Pompeo another character connected to medicine while taking her into a darker genre. Meredith Grey is a surgeon whose professional and personal life has been at the centre of Grey's Anatomy since the series premiered in 2005. Amelia, by contrast, begins the new story after losing the career she once had and finding herself involved in a murder mystery.

The Hulu project also brings Pompeo together with David E Kelley, whose television credits include Boston Legal and Big Little Lies. The connection carries an interesting piece of television history, since Boston Legal and Grey's Anatomy were both part of ABC's 2005 schedule before Pompeo and Kelley eventually teamed up on this new project.

Not A Sound is being written by Matthew Tinker and Annakate Chappell, with Azazel Jacobs attached to direct. David E Kelley is involved as an executive producer, while Pompeo and Laura Holstein are also executive producers. The project comes through Pompeo's overall deal with 20th Television, which is also the studio behind the series.

There is currently no announced premiere date for Not A Sound, and further casting details have yet to be revealed. The project remains in development at Hulu rather than being an already completed series.

Pompeo's television schedule is already busy. Hulu recently renewed Good American Family for a second season, with the anthology moving on from its first season's Natalia Grace story to the case involving Lorena and John Bobbitt. Pompeo is returning as an executive producer, although reports indicate she is not expected to star in the second season.

At the same time, Pompeo remains closely connected to Grey's Anatomy. ABC renewed the long running medical drama for Season 23 in March 2026, with Pompeo continuing as Meredith Grey in a recurring capacity and as the show's narrator. Her reduced presence on screen has allowed the series to continue while giving Pompeo room for other projects.

The renewal also followed significant cast changes. Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver departed as series regulars after Season 22, ending their long runs as Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman. Their characters left Grey Sloan Memorial together at the end of the season, while the door remains open for possible future appearances.
