Actors Mahira Khan and Wahaj Ali are set to share the screen for the first time in the upcoming drama Mitti De Baway, with the newly released trailer hinting at a romance that takes a darker turn.
Set in 1999, the trailer introduces Mahira as Billo, a young woman who falls for Ali's character Baala. What begins as an apparently tender love story soon gives way to separation, transformation and resentment.
Billo is 19 when she meets Baala, whose family is believed to be cursed when it comes to love. Their relationship, however, is cut short when Baala is sent to prison for an undisclosed crime. While Baala spends years behind bars, Billo’s life takes a different direction.
By the time the story moves to 2002, she has transformed from a lovestruck young woman into a pir, or spiritual guide, commanding a following and appearing far removed from the girl Baala once knew.
Baala’s return is shown as equally dramatic. He emerges from prison hardened, physically transformed and seemingly comfortable with firearms, with the trailer showing him involved in violent encounters. The trailer alludes to Billo, once deeply in love with Baala, now seemingly resenting him.
The pair's eventual reunion suggests that the drama will explore the consequences of their years apart, with the Billo and Baala seemingly caught between their unresolved past and the people they have become.
After the trailer, many celebrities reacted to the serial, wishing both Mahira and Ali luck on the upcoming project.
"What a teaser! The looks, the vibe, the performances. Everything looks incredible," actor Kinza Hashmi said, while fellow star Bilal Abbas added, "This looks BIG! One of the best trailers I have seen in a long time. Everything looks promising. Wishing the entire team the very best!"
Other stars including Maya Ali, Iqra Aziz, Hina Afridi, Yasir Hussain, and Shuja Asad also expressed their appreciation for the teaser and their excitement to see the complete work.
Fans also praised the trailer for its production and shared that it looked promising. "Pure cinematic action," one user wrote while another said that the Pakistani drama industry was at its peak now.
Written by Faiza Iftikhar and directed by Syed Wajahat Hussain, Mitti De Baway marks Mahira and Ali’s first television pairing. The actors have both established themselves as leading names in the country's entertainment industry, making their collaboration one of the more anticipated aspects of the project.
