'Brothers' will premiere on Apple TV on September 23, 2026, with the first two episodes released at once

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are taking their decades-long friendship to an entirely new level in the first trailer for Apple's upcoming comedy series Brothers, which imagines what would happen if the longtime friends discovered they might actually be related.

The trailer, released on August 25, sees the two actors playing fictionalised versions of themselves as their familiar friendship is thrown into chaos by a shocking family revelation. The series takes inspiration from the real-life speculation that McConaughey and Harrelson could potentially share a biological father, something the actors have publicly discussed in recent years.

In the series, Harrelson travels with his family to McConaughey's Texas ranch after his daughter's engagement falls apart. What begins as an extended stay quickly becomes much more complicated when McConaughey's mother, played by Holland Taylor, reveals a decades-old secret that suggests the two actors could be half-brothers.

"You and Matthew might be brothers?" someone asks Harrelson in the trailer.

"Yes," he replies.

The possibility sends Harrelson into a mission to uncover the truth, while McConaughey is dealing with his own major life decision. The fictionalised version of the actor is considering a run for governor of Texas, adding another layer of chaos to an already unusual family situation.

The trailer deliberately plays with the pair's real personalities and friendship. It opens with McConaughey energetically banging his chest in front of a mirror while Harrelson sits nearby trying to remain calm, immediately establishing the contrasting personalities that have made the two such popular screen partners.

Their chemistry is familiar to fans who watched them together in the first season of True Detective, although Brothers is very different from the HBO crime drama. Harrelson recently warned audiences not to expect another True Detective, describing the new series as a comedy that is much closer in tone to something like Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The real-life story behind the series is almost as unusual as its fictional premise. Harrelson has previously said that his father, Charles Harrelson, may have had a relationship with McConaughey's mother, Kay McConaughey, before Matthew was born. The possibility has remained a source of fascination for the two friends, although they have never taken a DNA test to establish whether they are actually related.

In Brothers, that unresolved question becomes the foundation for an eight-episode comedy about friendship, family and what happens when a lifelong bond suddenly takes on a completely different meaning.

The cast also includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Oona Yaffe, Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton and Noah Carganilla. Lee Eisenberg serves as showrunner and executive producer, while McConaughey and Harrelson are also executive producers.

The series marks another reunion for McConaughey and Harrelson, who have been friends for decades and previously appeared together in EDtv, Surfer, Dude and True Detective. Their long-running friendship is now becoming part of the show's appeal, with Brothers intentionally blurring the line between their real lives and the exaggerated versions of themselves they play on screen.

Brothers will premiere on Apple TV on September 23, 2026, with the first two episodes released together followed by new episodes every Wednesday.
