Mindy Kaling's ‘Not Suitable for Work’ gets axed by Hulu

Nine episodes aired after the series launched in June, with Warner Bros. TV now seeking potential new buyers

Hulu has cancelled Mindy Kaling's comedy Not Suitable for Work after one season, ending the series' run on the streaming platform after nine episodes. The decision comes only months after the show launched in June, with Warner Bros. Television now preparing to take the comedy to potential new buyers.

The series was created by Kaling and marked her first sole creator credit on a project since The Mindy Project. Kaling also served as an executive producer alongside showrunner Charlie Grandy and 3 Arts Entertainment's Howard Klein. The production came from Kaling International in association with Warner Bros. Television.

While Hulu will not continue with a second season, the show's story may not necessarily be over. Warner Bros. TV plans to shop Not Suitable for Work to other potential homes, leaving open the possibility of another platform picking up the comedy.

The series starred Ella Hunt as AJ, an investment banker from Boston who relocates to New York for a new job. After arriving in the city, AJ moves in with her best friend Abby, an aspiring celebrity stylist played by Avantika. Their lives become intertwined with a group of young professionals and friends living across the hall.

Will Angus played Davis, AJ's co worker at the investment bank, while Jack Martin portrayed Josh, a young journalist and the son of a wealthy media executive. Nicholas Duvernay played Kel, an aspiring actor and former medical student, with Jay Ellis appearing as Bill, AJ and Davis' boss.

The ensemble also included several recurring guest stars, including Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, Harry Richardson, Constance Wu, Laura Bell Bundy, May Hong, Bhavesh Patel, Emilia Suárez and Michael Benjamin Washington.

Not Suitable for Work centred on ambitious young professionals attempting to build careers while dealing with friendships, dating and personal expectations in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighbourhood. The series originally carried the title Murray Hill before being developed under its current name.

The cancellation also adds another chapter to Kaling's television career, which has included acclaimed projects such as Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and Running Point. The Mindy Project, meanwhile, began on Fox before moving to Hulu, where it continued for three additional seasons.

Variety previously gave Not Suitable for Work a mixed review, describing the series as a broad comedy with glimpses of a sharper story about young people balancing professional pressure and relationships in New York. The review also highlighted Constance Wu's performance as one of the show's stronger elements.

For Hulu, the cancellation leaves the nine episode comedy without a second season, while Warner Bros. Television now has the opportunity to test whether another streaming service or network sees potential in the series. Any future home or renewal remains unconfirmed, and there is currently no announced second season.
