Sandra Bullock opens up about how her children understood Bryan Randall’s ALS diagnosis

Sandra Bullock has opened up about how her children understood partner Bryan Randall’s battle with ALS before his death in August 2023.

Bullock discussed Randall’s illness during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, explaining that her children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, were "completely aware" of the situation because they lived in the same home.

"They were "completely aware," Bullock said Monday on the SmartLess podcast hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes.

"Absolutely aware, because once there is a situation where you're bedridden. We all have to go there. It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it."

Randall, a model-turned-photographer, was diagnosed with ALS in 2020. Bullock said she arranged for a child therapist to be available to Louis and Laila following his diagnosis.

She explained that the children could see Randall’s physical changes and recognise how the illness affected the household.

"Well, they could see. They have eyes, and they are very, very astute kids," Bullock said. "Very astute, because they not only see the physical change, there's a behavior that changes in all of us. You know, I'm hyper vigilant."

Bullock also described the practical challenges of caring for Randall, including arranging suitable in-home nursing care during the pandemic.

"I became manic in my vigilance, because I had to not only make sure he was okay. I had to make sure we could keep the nurses," she said.

The actress said her children responded differently to Randall’s illness. Louis recognised that the situation was difficult for him and chose to remain supportive, "He's like, you know what, I'm here for you," Bullock said.
