Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' sails past $1.4b to become his biggest hit yet

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has reached another extraordinary milestone at the worldwide box office, with the epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem now sitting at approximately $1.4b globally. The result makes it the highest grossing film of Nolan’s career, overtaking The Dark Knight Rises and adding another major achievement to an already remarkable theatrical run.

The milestone comes after the film had already rewritten the record books by becoming the highest grossing R rated movie in history. The Odyssey passed Deadpool & Wolverine, which previously held the worldwide record with approximately $1.338b. Nolan’s film reached $1.352b when it claimed the title and has continued adding to that total.

Released in cinemas on July 17, The Odyssey opened with an impressive $123.5m in North America during its first weekend. Its domestic performance has remained strong throughout the summer, with the film earning an estimated $19.5m during the weekend of August 21 to August 23. The film’s R rating has made its commercial performance particularly striking. Before The Odyssey, only two R rated films had crossed $1b worldwide, Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker. Nolan’s film became the third to reach that threshold, passing $1b on August 7 before eventually overtaking the Marvel film for the all time R rated record.

IMAX has also played a significant role in the film’s theatrical performance. The movie has generated substantial revenue from premium format screenings, with IMAX accounting for approximately $354m of its worldwide total at the point when the film claimed the R rated record. The large format success fits Nolan’s long standing commitment to theatrical presentation and large screen filmmaking.

International audiences have been especially important to the film’s record breaking run. At the point when it passed Deadpool & Wolverine, The Odyssey had earned roughly $516m in North America and $835m internationally. Markets including the United Kingdom and Ireland, France, Italy and China contributed strongly to the overseas total.

For Nolan, the achievement is another major career landmark following the success of Oppenheimer. That 2023 film became a huge global success and earned Nolan his first Academy Award for Best Director. The Odyssey has now taken his commercial reach even further, proving that an ambitious adaptation of classical literature can still command enormous audiences in modern cinemas.

With its theatrical run continuing, the final worldwide total for The Odyssey remains open. What is already clear is that Nolan’s interpretation of Homer has become his biggest box office success, while Matt Damon’s Odysseus has helped turn one of the oldest stories in Western literature into one of 2026’s defining cinematic events.
