Dr. Dre embraces AI in music production despite industry concerns
Dr. Dre says he uses AI as a creative tool in music production and does not view the technology as a threat.

Dr. Dre has revealed that he uses artificial intelligence in his music production, saying he views the technology as a creative tool rather than a threat.
The eight-time Grammy winner discussed his approach to AI in a recent interview with The New York Times. As the music industry continues to debate the impact of artificial intelligence, Dre said he has chosen to experiment with the technology instead of resisting it.
“I don’t see it as a threat,” Dre said, arguing that people who fear AI may be uncomfortable with new approaches to creativity. He compared the technology to the introduction of drum machines and synthesizers, which also changed the way music was created.
Dre confirmed that he is actively using AI to explore how the technology can interact with his existing work.
“Yes, I’m using it,” the rapper and producer said, describing AI as a tool that allows him to see what it can do with material he has already created.
The producer also said he is interested in seeing how AI develops and what new possibilities it could bring to music production.
Dre’s longtime friend and business partner Jimmy Iovine also suggested that many music producers are experimenting with AI privately. Dre agreed, saying there are “a lot of closet AI producers” who are using the technology but are reluctant to acknowledge it publicly.
The comments come as artificial intelligence continues to generate debate across the music industry. AI-generated music has raised concerns over copyright, ownership and the use of existing recordings in training generative AI systems.
Companies developing AI music tools have also faced legal challenges over copyrighted material. At the same time, platforms and industry organisations are increasingly working to identify music created or assisted by artificial intelligence.
Dre’s comments highlight the growing divide between artists who remain concerned about AI and those embracing it as another tool for music creation.
