Nick Jonas has recalled auditioning for the role of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen, revealing that he was not prepared to sing when he arrived for the audition.

Jonas shared the story during a special D23 episode of the Jonas Brothers’ Hey Jonas! podcast, where he spoke with Frozen stars Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad.

The actor and singer said he had gone out for the role in the 2013 animated film but struggled when asked what he would perform.

"I auditioned for Frozen. For Kristoff. I went in and they said 'OK, what are you going to be singing today?' I said: 'Oh, I don't know.' They're like 'What do you mean, you don't know? Do you have your sheet music?' 'No, no one told me…' So, I just said, 'Can you play, I don't know what musical theater song.' And, I bombed the audition. It was terrible."

The role ultimately went to Broadway actor Jonathan Groff, who voiced Kristoff in Frozen. Jonas had also returned to his Broadway roots in 2012, starring in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, following his earlier work as a child actor.

Despite not landing the Frozen role, Jonas said he enjoyed the finished film when he eventually watched it.

"I didn't spite watch it. I really did enjoy the first time."

Jonas and his brothers were named Disney Legends at the D23 Expo for their history with Disney Channel.

His Frozen audition story emerged as the franchise prepares to continue with Frozen III, which is expected as part of Disney’s 2027 film schedule.
