HBO Max has officially ordered The People v. Gorilla Grodd, an eight-episode DC Studios mockumentary series starring Skyler Gisondo and Jimmy Tatro.
The series will see Gisondo reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen, which he first played in the 2025 Superman movie. Tatro will portray the superintelligent DC villain Gorilla Grodd in the comedy series.
According to the official premise, Grodd is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. Jimmy Olsen subsequently investigates the case for the Daily Planet, questioning whether Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most notorious murder trials.
The series will also feature several Superman cast members, including Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz are also part of the cast.
American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as writers, executive producers and showrunners, with Yacenda directing all eight episodes. Perrault will also appear in the series. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television are producing, with James Gunn and Peter Safran among the executive producers.
The project is designed as a true-crime-style documentary created within the DC Universe, offering a comedic look at Metropolis’ criminal justice system.
Yacenda and Perrault previously gained recognition for American Vandal, the Netflix mockumentary that parodied true-crime documentaries. They later created the Paramount+ series Players.
The announcement comes as DC Studios continues expanding its television slate under Gunn and Safran. The People v. Gorilla Grodd offers a different comedic approach to the DCU while bringing back characters and actors introduced in Superman.
