Riot Games is ending active development on 2XKO, its League of Legends fighting game, after determining that player engagement has not reached a level that would make continued development sustainable.

The developer announced Thursday that it will complete the game's remaining work-in-progress content before ending active development in December.

"Over the last few months, we’ve been monitoring 2XKO’s trajectory closely, and what we’ve seen is painting a clear, consistent picture: while a lot of you jumped in to try the game and there's an incredible community that plays every day, we haven’t seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability," Riot said.

Riot said it evaluated 2XKO based on revenue, player retention, new players and engagement.

However, the company said major updates had not produced a sustained change in the game's performance.

"To be super clear: we would have continued active development if we saw any viable future, but 2XKO costs us substantially more to operate than it brings in, and engagement has stayed relatively flat despite our larger updates."

Development will continue through the end of 2026, with Lux arriving in September and Samira in October. A final December patch will focus on bug fixes rather than major new content.

Riot will also end sales of KO Points, the game's premium currency, and unlock all champions.

Players who made purchases on or before August 20 are eligible for refunds. On PC, KO Points and Starter Edition purchases will be refunded to the original payment method, with most refunds expected within two weeks and all PC refunds targeted for completion by November. PlayStation and Xbox purchases will be refunded through the relevant platforms.

Although active development is ending, 2XKO will remain playable beyond 2026. Its servers will stay online for online play, while offline play will remain unaffected.

The game will remain free to download on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X, with 17 playable characters expected when active development concludes.
