Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has revealed that Marvel attributed the cancellation of Wonder Man to viewership numbers, but the actor says he was never shown the data behind the decision.
The Disney+ series, which starred Abdul-Mateen as Simon Williams, appeared to have a promising future after receiving positive reviews and earning the actor an Emmy nomination. Marvel had also renewed Wonder Man for a second season in March, only to reverse the decision and cancel the series in July.
Speaking about the cancellation, Abdul-Mateen said he was told the decision was related to the show’s audience figures. However, he said Marvel did not provide him with the actual numbers.
The actor believes Wonder Man deserved a closer examination because of its critical reception and the quality of its cast and production.
Abdul-Mateen also addressed comparisons between the cancellation of Wonder Man and the prolonged development of Marvel’s Blade, starring Mahershala Ali. He acknowledged the concerns surrounding Marvel’s Black-led projects, saying the “optics are obvious” and arguing that the studio should take steps to change that perception through strong stories and resources.
Despite the cancellation, Abdul-Mateen had already considered where Simon Williams could go in Wonder Man Season 2. He was particularly interested in exploring how Simon would respond after achieving the fame and success he had spent years pursuing.
For Abdul-Mateen, Simon’s ambition, ego and desire for stardom offered opportunities for a deeper storyline.
The actor has not confirmed whether Simon Williams could appear elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He instead appeared resigned to the cancellation, acknowledging that the entertainment business comes with both highs and lows.
