Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly about the private illness that affected her late partner Bryan Randall during the final years of their relationship, revealing that his request for secrecy left her carrying an enormous emotional burden.

The Oscar winning actor discussed Randall’s battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS, during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast. Randall died on August 5, 2023, aged 57, following a three year battle with the disease. His family confirmed his diagnosis only after his death and said at the time that he had chosen to keep his illness private.

Bullock explained that Randall had specifically asked her not to reveal his diagnosis. She respected that decision, but said the responsibility of keeping such significant news private affected her deeply.

“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it,” Bullock said, explaining that keeping the diagnosis secret “isolated me in the process”.

Her comments offer a rare insight into the reality of supporting someone through a progressive illness while also protecting their wishes. Bullock said she understood why Randall wanted privacy, yet the experience meant she had very few people outside her immediate family with whom she could discuss what was happening.

The actor also described how her grieving process began long before Randall died. She said she had started grieving him four years before his death because he had been ill for half of their relationship.

“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said, describing the emotional impact of watching someone she loved change during a prolonged illness.

Bullock and Randall began dating in 2015 after meeting when Randall photographed her son Louis for his birthday. They remained together for eight years and built a family life that included Bullock’s two children and Randall’s daughter from a previous relationship. Bullock had previously spoken warmly about Randall, describing him as the “love of my life” during a 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk.

The illness was especially difficult because Bullock was also supporting children who had formed close relationships with Randall. She said the experience became particularly painful as they watched his condition progress, with Randall serving as a father figure to her daughter.

Bullock also spoke about the psychological effects that accompanied the physical illness. She described the combination of Randall’s condition, its mental health consequences and the experience of raising children during that period as an exceptionally dark chapter for the family.

Randall’s family previously said he had chosen early in his illness to keep his ALS journey private. They expressed gratitude towards the doctors and nurses who cared for him throughout his final years and asked others to respect his wishes.

Bullock largely stepped away from the spotlight following Randall’s death, but she has gradually returned to public life. Her appearance on SmartLess comes as she prepares to return to the big screen in Practical Magic 2, alongside Nicole Kidman. The film is scheduled for release on September 10, 2026.
