Netflix is developing a prequel to its hit young adult series Outer Banks as the popular show prepares to conclude its five-season run.

The potential spinoff, reportedly referred to as Kildare, is being developed by Outer Banks creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke. The story would be set approximately 20 years before the events of the original series and explore how the fictional island’s long-running divide between the wealthy Kooks and working-class Pogues began.

Josh Pate confirmed that the creative team is currently working on the script with Netflix. He said the project aims to explore the origins of the social conflict that has shaped Outer Banks since its debut.

The prequel would focus on the previous generation of characters, potentially featuring younger versions or stories involving the parents of characters familiar to fans of the original series. Burke explained that the story would include both established characters and new figures while taking place two decades before the main show.

The original Outer Banks follows John B, Sarah Cameron, Pope, JJ and Kiara as they navigate treasure hunts, romance and conflicts between the island’s Pogues and Kooks. The series has gradually revealed more about the characters’ family histories, including the complicated backgrounds of JJ, Sarah and Rafe.

Netflix has not officially announced a series order for the Outer Banks prequel. A representative for the streaming service declined to comment on the project.

The potential spinoff comes as Outer Banks reaches its fifth and final season, which premieres on Netflix on Aug. 20, 2026. The creators are also developing other projects under their overall deal with Netflix.

If ordered, the Outer Banks prequel could expand the franchise while giving viewers a deeper look at the origins of Kildare Island’s class divide.
